Alzer Hotel
A friendly mom-and-pop hotel set right in the middle of Istanbuls great imperial monuments - the Blue Mosque is across the street, the palace of the Grand Vezir is next door, and just at the spot where you casually pull up your cafe table the Hippodrome factions once used to raise hell against the Byzantine Emperors.
Externally the hotel does not promise much. Inside, the rooms are spacious and charmingly furnished. The 1000 squaere-foot Pasha’s room would do honour to the grand vezir himself. A breathtakingly panoramic roof terrace doubles up as breakfast hall.
The real attraction lies in the human element. The Sur familiy runs the hotel with the sort of earnist hospitality that one takes for granted in a faraway country inn but would hardly expect in the heart of the metropolis.
