Halikarnassos (Bodrum)
The district was once the home of sponge divers and a sanctuary for unwanted people deported from their towns, a small picturesque harbour village with white washed houses,. However today, with its hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants Bodrum is the most popular holiday resort in Turkey.
Bodrum is also famous for the mausoleum which is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The capital of the Caria Kingdom. Halikarnassos takes its place in history as the birth place of Heredotus. The famous citadel of the knights is a museum today where especially artfiacts found underwater are exhibited.
