The city which through the 5 thousand years since it was founded till our times, has always been a religious centre. During teh Ikonion Empire it was a very economically powerful state. In the Byzantine era it be come a bishoprie and after the Seljuk conquest was made the capital.
During the crusades Frederick Barbarossa took the city but Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat rewconquered he region and restored it to its former splendour.
The Aladdin mosque with 42 columns built on order by the sultan with ancient building material and the Mevlana Celalettin mausoleum attract countless visitors to day.
